La Unión Ciclista Internacional es la asociación de federaciones nacionales de ciclismo. Fue creada el 14 de abril de 1900 en París integrando inicialmente a las federaciones de Francia, Bélgica, Italia, Suiza y Estados Unidos de América siendo su primer presidente el belga Emile de Beukelaer.Actualmente la sede de la UCI está en Aigle y el presidente en funciones es desde septiembre de 2013 el británico Brian Cookson.IntroducciónLa UCI ofrece licencias a corredores y organiza unas reglas disciplinarias, como por ejemplo en asuntos de dopaje. También controla la clasificación de las carreras y el sistema del ranking de puntos en varias disciplinas ciclistas, como la montaña, carretera y contrarreloj, para ambas competiciones masculinas y femeninas, ya sean amateur o profesional. Además, supervisa los Mundiales en varias disciplinas y diferentes categorías, en donde compiten los países en vez de los equipos. Los ganadores de estas carreras tienen el derecho de portar un jersey especial con el color del arcoíris ("maillot arcoíris") el año siguiente, además de llevar el dibujo del arcoíris en el puño y cuello durante el resto de la carrera profesional.
