Vernay is a former municipality in the district of Broye, in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It was created on 1 January 2006 from the merger of the municipalities of Autavaux, Forel and Montbrelloz. The administrative seat is in Forel.On 1 January 2017 the former municipalities of Vernay, Bussy, Estavayer-le-Lac, Morens, Murist, Rueyres-les-Prés and Vuissens merged into the new municipality of Estavayer.GeographyVernay had an area, of 8.3km2. Of this area, 6.2km2 or 74.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.51km2 or 18.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.46km2 or 5.5% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.02km2 or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes and 0.16km2 or 1.9% is unproductive land.Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.6%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 64.2% is used for growing crops and 7.7% is pastures, while 2.9% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in lakes.DemographicsVernay had a population of 1,119., 6.4% of the population are resident foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years (2000–2010) the population has changed at a rate of 25.3%. Migration accounted for 19%, while births and deaths accounted for 6.4%.
