Provence is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.HistoryProvence is first mentioned in 1340 as Provency.GeographyProvence has an area, of 31.84km2. Of this area, 17.36km2 or 54.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 13.74km2 or 43.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.7km2 or 2.2% is settled (buildings or roads) and 0.06km2 or 0.2% is unproductive land.Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 0.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.5%. Out of the forested land, 36.1% of the total land area is heavily forested and 7.0% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 3.2% is used for growing crops and 12.4% is pastures and 38.6% is used for alpine pastures.The municipality was part of the Grandson District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Provence became part of the new district of Jura-Nord Vaudois.The municipality is located on the border of the Val-de-Travers and stretches from the foot of Mont Aubert to Creux-du-Van.
