Épendes is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.HistoryÉpendes is first mentioned in 1154 as Spinles. In 1174 it was mentioned as Espinnes. The municipality is the site of the Château d'Épendes and the Observatory of Épendes, which is open to the public.GeographyÉpendes has an area, of 4.8km2. Of this area, 3.62km2 or 74.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.66km2 or 13.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.45km2 or 9.3% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.1km2 or 2.1% is either rivers or lakes.Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 6.2%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 66.0% is used for growing crops and 7.5% is pastures, while 1.4% is used for orchards or vine crops.
