The creation of the Musée cantonal des Beaux-arts/Lausanne in 1841 was the result of painter Louis Arlaud’s private initiative. The museum is housed since 1906 in the Palais de Rumine, a neo-Florentine style building. The main focus of the MCBA collections ranges from the second half of the eighteenth century to Post-Impressionism, with particular emphasis on Cubism and Vaudois abstractionism. As continuation of the modern art collections, the collections of contemporary art endeavour to create a dialogue between Swiss and international art, established artists and newly emerging practices. MCBA regularly presents exhibitions of modern and contemporary Swiss and international art, either solo shows (Alice Bailly, Charles Gleyre, Renée Green, Alfredo Jaar, Ellsworth Kelly, Bruce Nauman, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen and others) or theme-based (The World according to François Dubois, The Flood, Like Animals, etc.)
(Please note that the collections are not on permanent display)
