Bosne i Hercegovine.

The diaspora as development potential

According to data of the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are around 2 million people who have temporarily or permanently emigrated from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Emigrants still have a particularly strong emotional bond with their home country, which is also confirmed by the fact that the emigrants, or diaspora, a frequently used term for this group, annually provide around two billion US$ in remittances to Bosnia and Herzegovina, mostly as private financial support to family and friends. A study has shown that the great potential of the diaspora for contributing to the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina unfortunately still remains untapped, especially
the knowledge, experience and professional skills and networks of members of the diaspora acquired in other countries.

The findings of research conducted in Switzerland in 2014 demonstrate that there are more than 60,000 emigrants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, working and living in this country, who are very well-integrated in the Swiss system and society and constitute a high-quality and indispensable resource for establishing and strengthening social, economic, cultural, scientific and any other form of cooperation between Switzerland and
Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The above mentioned research has shown that in Switzerland, there is still no ethnically and religiously independent platform that would actively involve and connect different actors (organisations and individuals) interested in contributing to the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina in different fields.
For this reason, the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development
(SDC) decided to support a project that would establish such a platform
in Switzerland and awarded this mandate to the organisation i-dijaspora, which gathers experts from different fields of expertise who originate from Bosnia and Herzegovina and have been living and working in Switzerland
for a number of years.

The i-platform is intended as a cooperation and coordination office that will gather, compile and promote important information, initiatives and actors from both countries interested in contributing to the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina in different areas of activity.
