Management, processing and visualization of information from big data collections
The Institute of 4D Technologies works on problems related with the management, processing, and visualization of large data collections. Its aim is to design and develop real-world applications that are able to generate more knowledge, more choice, and more personalization to the data users.
The deep competences of the institute competences are in computer science. Themes that are addressed include databases, data mining, optimization, social network analysis, computer graphics, and user interaction design. However, it has a strong multidisciplinary orientation and unites many disciplines from the application domains, making it possible to configure projects with not only computer science expertise but also with domain knowledge. Therefore, it includes mathematicians, physicists, designers, architects, civil engineers, communication specialists, and artists. The current application domains are quite various, ranging from job marketing, astroinformatics, science, and civil engineering.
The Institute is home of STIX, the Spectrometer / Telescope for Imaging X-rays, one of the 10 instruments that will fly on Solar Orbiter. It also has a science group in Heliophysics. With these two groups, the Institute covers the entire "data life cycle" from the creation to the interpretation of data.
The Institutes hosts several data archives, including the European mirror of the RHESSI data archive, as well as the primary archive of the e-Callisto network. It strongly and actively promotes open data access to anyone.
